Blu DeTiger Lays Down Irresistible Bass Hooks and Earnest Introspection on Debut LP “All I Ever Want Is Everything”

On her debut album, All I Ever Want Is Everything, bass virtuoso Blu DeTiger lays down a sonic collection of groovy pop hits. Threaded through every track are the two staples of her magnetic sound — robust riffs rumbling through effervescent melodics — as she gives voice to frenetic self-discovery. You will also have the chance to catch her on a spring headlining tour across the U.S. this month including a stop at The Troubadour in Los Angeles on May 4th.

All I Ever Want Is Everything doesn’t take long to infect you with its jittery energy as DeTiger emerges on “Latency” atop a jaunty wave of vigorous bass and pell-mell of buoyant percussion. The track electrifies a haze of melancholic but veracious confessions about breaking free from malaise. On “Dangerous Game” she syncs those headily booming rhythms to a breezy and cheekily devil-may-care leap into love. Then there is the alt-rock grit that coats the anthemic and unshackling spirit of “Overdrive” which closes out the record on an unabashedly high note.

“Moxie” drips with funk and lovesick nostalgia while the hyper-kinetic bop “Kiss” wrestles with the situational bittersweetness that comes with running into an ex-lover. Chappell Roan shares a co-write on the flirtatiously punchy “Hey You” — lending the song’s lyricism her characteristically saucy hypnosis as a flurry of warbling riffs crackles over them. Near the end of the album the “Sad Girl Machine” rumbles to life as DeTiger wakes herself from paralyzing idleness with spacey but ebullient hooks and affirmations.

Apart from the contemporaries who assisted with the writing on the record — which includes Mayer Hawthorne, Alexander 23, and DeTiger’s brother Rex — she also collaborated on two tracks. Leaning into rapid pop punctuated by weightlessly energetic bass “Cut Me Down” unites her with the electro-hop concoctions of Australian artist Mallrat. The paradisial synths and glimmering guitars of Magdalena Bay saturate the soundscape that eclipses within “Disappearing.”

“This album is about really enjoying the high moments in life, but also learning how to talk yourself out of the low moments and become your own best friend,” DeTiger said. “I want to let people know that you can feel it all and do it all. Wherever you’re at is cool.”

True to that goal All I Ever Want Is Everything exerts an infectious will upon the listener to unburden themselves of all that is weighing them down. Aided by the elastic exuberance of her trusty bass and the unfettered thrill that charges her lyricism, DeTiger rises to meet life with invigorating confidence.
